Weed & Mosquito Control Programs

Noxious Weeds

Any herbicide application requires the county to have a Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) Certified Pesticide Applicator qualified to perform the work. The Caroline County Weed Control Program is a cooperative program with the MDA that provides spraying of noxious weeds. Weeds that are sprayed include Thistle, Johnsongrass and Shattercane.

Mosquitoes

The Mosquito Control Program is a service provided by the Caroline County Public Works Department in cooperation with the Maryland Department of Agriculture. The program focuses primarily on the removal, or control of mosquito breeding areas in all parts of the county. When adult mosquitoes are present to the point of being a nuisance and a threat to public health, fogging trucks are sent into the problem area.

Subscriptions for the Mosquito Control Program are accepted in the early spring. There is a $165 annual fee for residential properties. Towns and larger properties will receive an estimated cost per application. Payment is due at the time application is received for mosquito control services.

Mosquito Control Application

Note: All persons participating, whether in a neighborhood group or not, must complete and sign a registration form.

As applications are received, we will make every effort to personally visit each property during daytime working hours. We will inspect for possible breeding areas, and make suggestions on ways to reduce the possibility of mosquito breeding. If you know of an area, close to or on your property, which you feel may breed mosquitoes, please make a note on the bottom of the application form, and an inspection will be made. Any other questions or comments are welcomed.

An individual may have his/her owned or leased property excluded from nuisance mosquito control.  This exclusion will include a buffer of approximately 300 feet around the property.  Each individual requesting this exclusion must submit the request in writing to the Maryland Department of Agriculture and provide a copy to the appropriate town or county government.  The individual may also notify the appropriate community association.  The request must include the address of the property to be excluded from spraying and must be signed by the owner(s) or lessee(s).  Annual updates are required of requests for exclusion from spraying.  Click here to access the form that must be submitted to the Department of Agriculture to opt out.

Please note: Exemptions are not automatically granted to applicants and are at the discretion of the Department of Agriculture.  Requests may be denied if it is in the Department determines continued spraying is in the best interest of the general public.

Please contact Public Works at 410-479-0520 for more information.
